Charles H. Selman Memorial Scholarship

The Alaska CHARR Education Fund awards scholarships once a year to Alaska residents who are interested in pursuing a career in the Alaskan hospitality industry.  The deadline to submit scholarship applications to the CHARR office is May 15th.

The Charlie H. Selman Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Charlie Selman, long-time CHARR member and owner of the Club Paris in Anchorage, partner in the Double Musky in Girdwood and one of the original engineers to discover oil in Prudhoe Bay, AK. 

This scholarship program is made possible by fundraising at our annual Charlie Selman Memorial Golf Tournament, participation by members who sell pulltabs on behalf of the Ed Fund and by personal and corporate contributions.

 

Qualifications for the Scholarship:

  1. Applicant must be an Alaskan resident of at least two years duration prior to applying for the scholarship
  2. Applicant must be accepted for admission to an accredited university or post-secondary vocational school
  3. Applicant must plan to pursue a career in the Alaska hospitality industry

Alaska CHARR Invests in the Future!

Awarding $20,000.00 in scholarships to deserving students

The Alaska CHARR Educational Fund, Inc. (CHARR Ed Fund) was pleased to award 17 scholarships totaling $20,000.00 for the 2009 fall academic semester. The Alaska CHARR Scholarship Fund Program was created to encourage academic achievement and educational opportunities for Alaska students in the hospitality industry, and is supported by proceeds from the Annual Charles H. Selman Golf Tournament and private donations and support.

The funds are used to defray the cost of textbooks and tuition in an accredited university, college or post-secondary vocation school. “We hope to support our Alaskan students and enrich our communities,” says Dale Fox, President of Alaska CHARR. “Our applicants all demonstrate a passion for our Alaska hospitality industry, and a desire to serve or better their community and we are proud to give our support to these wonderful students.”

Alaska CHARR Educational Fund, Inc., partnering with the Give Something Back Foundation, is in the third year of providing one stand-out applicant with a special four-year scholarship awarding $5,000 annually. The Scholarship Committee is pleased to continue to provide support to:

• Shauna Moore, Chugiak – University of Alaska Anchorage

Ms. Moore has demonstrated commitment to excellence in the hospitality industry, is a dedicated Alaskan and has an outstanding academic and service history. Ms. Moore graduated magna cum laude with her Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts in May of 2008 and she is currently a double-major at the University of Alaska Anchorage, working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Management and a bachelor’s in Education.

Ms. Moore is well on her way to achieving her goal of becoming a culinary art’s and inspiring students with her love of learning and passion for cooking; instilling a positive lasting effect on her students, much the way Chef Jack Nurmi of the King Career Center motivated her. In an impressive display of tongue-twister-y, Ms. Moore exclaims “I aspire to inspire students the way he inspired me!” When school is out of session and tourist season is in full-swing, Ms. Moore intends to flex her culinary muscles to remain active in the industry all year long.

Alaska CHARR awards scholarships once a year. Applications are available year round and are open to all Alaska residents interested in pursuing a career in Alaska’s hospitality industry. The application deadline for the 2010 fall semester is May 15, 2010. The next round of Alaska CHARR scholarships will be awarded in August 2010.
