The 2010 Alaska ProStart Student Invitational was held on Saturday, April 3 at the UAA Cuddy Center. Students from Chugiak, East, and Kodiak High Schools battled it out to become the top ProStart culinary champion team in the state!

This year the menu included some beautiful meals and astonishing techniques. Kodiak High School served an eco-conscience salmon, and finished with a beautiful carrot ginger sorbet. Chugiak High School created a beautiful wild Alaskan Bounty meal which dazzled with a bison main course. The meal from East High School was a beautiful and aromatic Mediterranean chicken that was used from the chicken fabrication portion of the competition and they displayed some amazing molecular gastronomy techniques. All around the students amazed the crowds with their culinary ingenuity and team efforts.

But the big news of the day is the winner! The 2010 Alaska State ProStart Culinary title goes to East High School!

The East High School ProStart team walked away with $120,000 in scholarships from both Kendall College and Seattle Art Institute. Besides the honor of being Alaska’s ProStart champions and educational scholarships, these students will travel to Overland Park, Kansas to represent Alaska in the National ProStart Invitational taking place over the weekend of April 30. Teams placing first through fifth nationally are awarded medals as well as additional scholarships to pursue a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

Alaska ProStart and Alaska CHARR would like to thank all those who helped to make the 2010 Alaska ProStart State Championship a success! A big thank you goes out to all of the volunteer judges, educators, and the chef mentors who have been involved in the competition. ProStart would also like to thank Tim Doebler of UAA, Head Judge Ian Rhude of Linford, and Robert McCormick of Orso and Glacier Brewhouse for all of their time and dedication to Alaska ProStart program.
